科研寫作經常混淆的單詞：alternate和alternative

同義詞是具有類似含義的詞語，詞與詞之間的確切意義可能會稍有不同。然而，本文所討論的并不是同義詞，而是一對經常被混淆的單詞，其中的一個詞有時會被誤認為另一個。

在表達你的意思時，同義詞并不會像混淆詞那樣造成嚴重的問題。如，Nearly和Almost在實際使用上是可以互換的。然而，當你想要表達的意思是alternative（替代），卻誤用了alternate（輪流）的話，則可能影響你所要表達的意思的清晰度。

alternative和alternate之間的區別是同等明確的，至少在英式英語中是這樣的：alternate意味著有兩種可能性，且在一個給定的時間中，只有其中一種可能發生；例如，a bar code consists of alternating strips of black and white。如果某個事件被描述為隔日發生，那如果它發生在周一的話，便不能在緊接著的周二發生，因此，alternate所表示的是輪流的意思，即，首先為第一種可能，接著是其他的可能，然后再是第一種可能。

alternative則表示不同的方案或選擇：如，the sun and the wind are alternative sources of energy or an e-mail message is a faster alternative to "snail mail" (i.e., a message sent through the post office)。
